Try it: DB Bistro & Oyster Bar

Chef Daniel Boulud

So I’m not a french cuisine expert, besides the very well known filet mignon dish served all over the world I haven’t tried much until I ended up in this restaurant in Singapore at the Shopees of Marina Bay Sands. DB Bistro & Oyster Bar, maybe it doesn’t sound like a very fancy place but I gotta say they really changed my impression towards french cuisine. I visited this place with my fiancee who also had no idea of what to expect from their menu. I felt like I was the one who knew about most of the dishes, still I had only but a slight idea of some ingredients and names. If you consider yourself a foodie as well, then you must probably have checked some videos or read a bit about frog legs, liver patee (foie gras), escargots, filet mignon, truffles, …

Well I haven’t gone to France yet, but this place certainly felt like a real deal with most of the famous dishes and a waiter that also knows what she is talking about and a good pronunciation (not like myself haha).

We went for sharing the full course meal which got us five plates for $98 + taxes and one extra lobster roll. Now the important notes, food.

Hello with their entry spiced bread buns, wow this small ball of flavor was so good I had to ask for another one.

Oyster first, “VANDERBILT” gratinated hot kind of dish, not what I expected as I’ve only tried raw oysters before. Well, now I’m not a big fan of this one but, it was something new to try.

Second dish, here comes what I’ve heard much about but, I had never tried the foie gras. In Costa Rica we have patee, it is not from duck but how different can it be? Well that fatty liver does taste good and they gave some great bread toasts to pair with. This one had a yellow fatty layer on the end side which is basically just fat and made it taste even better. For a first experience, yes go for it and try it.

Third dish, Filet mignon. Well in this dish I didn’t expect a lot either, but to be honest this is a technical kind of dish. You don’t just have meat taste alone, you need to create a flavorful sauce that goes with the meat. Their truffle and peppery sauce combined with the mashed potatoes and a piece of tender, juicy, high quality sirloin cooked to perfection (medium well) was the best one I’ve tried so far.

Forth dish, this one I asked as an additional plate. How good could they do a lobster roll? Can they beat one from Boston? Well they did not, but they are not really comparable. This one is so fresh and light on flavor with avocado and with a light butter taste on the very soft bread. Ohh and some french fries as a side. I did enjoy it, but probably would not order it again. Nothing that can beat a Boston lobster roll.

Fifth dish, dessert. I was so in a hurry that I forgot about dessert and the waiter very kindly reminded us. Wow, thank you so much because this chocolate wonder was very well plated and beautifully presented. Not just for the eye, but also so tasty, not on the sweet side more dark chocolate flavor than anything else and with a ball of ice cream.

We ended up feeling very satisfied by that experience at DB Bistro, even though it is a bit pricey and you might have to choose the appropriate dishes to make it worth, it offers quite a pleasant time. Be prepared to spend over $150 SGD without drinks and finding a menu that keeps changing and isn’t too large. If you are too picky, then there might not be enough options. If you go for wine bottles you’ll easily get up to the $500 for two.

Is it worth it? For me it was, the quality, presentation, service and the with great company is completely desired for the ambience. I’d probably would not go on my own just to eat here, but that is my preference as I can enjoy a $5 meal at the most simple eatery which most times are the best options. But, going there with someone you care and enjoy a good meal in a fancier place, yes this one works.

Ohh if you do have MBS reward points, these can be spent here and help with the bill.
